Johileny Meran
A Disabled Afro-Dominican immigrant raised in NYC. Johileny is passionate about advocacy, education, and empowering youth.
She has a BA in Global Public Health & Sociology with a minor in Disability Studies from New York University. Johileny champions inclusion in study abroad programs, college communities, emergency response and all aspects of her personal and professional life.
In her free time, she mentors, engages in adaptive sports and shares her travel experiences.
As a Disabled Traveler, Johileny has explored eight countries and counting. She studied abroad in London and worked as an international exchange professional for three years, dedicated to increasing the participation of people with disabilities in international exchange opportunities.
United, Promoting Leadership, Innovation of the Disabled (UPLIFT’D) started in 2021 as a project partnering with Latinas & Lideres to help a teenager in the Dominican Republic get access to a wheelchair and other disability-related supports. Now, UPLIFT'D will become a information hub and resource for post-secondary educational opportunities for students with disabilities.

I am a writer, I enjoy writing articles and sharing my experience through writing. Some of my stories and interviews have been published on different sites. I have had press interviews but this is my story and knowledge told by me.
I experienced adaptive sports for the first time as a junior in highschool. It was the first time I realized opportunities are limitless. I believe all children should have the opportunity to participate in team sports. I use sports as an a way to stay active.
“My mom inspired me to blaze my own trail. She believed that education was power and that it was the one thing no one would ever take away from me. Despite my living circumstances and despite people’s limiting beliefs.
To this day, I can still remember those words and how they have fueled me to continue to move forward.
