As part of her Global Equity Fellowship, Johileny was tasked with coming up with a project relating to her site that would help improve diversity, equity, and inclusion resources for NYU students studying in London as part of their abroad experience. Informed by and reflecting on her own experience studying abroad as a student with a disability, Johileny chose to create the NYU London Access Culture Guide to improve the resources students with disabilities receive when considering studying abroad, and once they have decided to do so.
Learn More About it Below!
Following a semester in London, Johileny Merán wanted to improve the experiences of other students with disabilities going abroad. Here, she shares her ideas for how exchange professionals can contribute to an inclusive environment for students with disabilities. Originally presented at the 2019 Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) conference.
Confronted with ableism, sexism and racism on a Barcelona tour bus, Johileny Merán mustered the strength to advocate for herself. The experience shone a spotlight on how her identities as a disabled Afrolatina woman are not only inextricably linked, but they also shape the way she experiences the world.
"Join us as traveler and disability advocate Johileny Meran shares invaluable insights on how to empower students with disabilities to explore the world. We discuss her study abroad experience in London, receive tips for creating more inclusive gap year experiences and feel reaffirmed in the transformative impact of international experiences for all.
